The Right Attitude

MTI student behind the wheel Successful Earning Your Wheels graduates:
  • show up on time, ready to work and learn,
  • they listen and work diligently to apply the concepts they are taught,
  • they aren’t afraid to make a decision or to jump in to get the job done,
  • they all have a “can-do” attitude.
Earning Your Wheels is a challenging course and the right attitude is important to ensure your success. You will spend full days in the classroom and the trucks. You are expected to give 100%, and in return you will receive the best professional truck driver training available. Our instructors are all experienced professional drivers and they will work with you to give you the skills and knowledge you need to succeed. As long as you make the effort they will do everything they can for you. If you aren’t ready to make the effort now, call us when you are.

The course takes 12 consecutive weeks of scheduled training. The first 8 weeks are spent at MTI’s Castlegar campus and the last 4 weeks are spent driving with a certified coach in a working company truck.

The first 8 weeks of the program consists of a minimum of 140 hours in the classroom/lab, 85 hours behind the wheel/in the yard, and 70 hours in truck observation time.

There are written evaluations, 12 unit and 1 final, which the students must pass with at least 80% grade. We also administer 17 skills evaluations throughout the course to prove mastery in the driving skills taught. The constant testing of the students assures only those committed to a professional driving career will succeed, which puts our graduates in high demand.

Students that are successful in all of the evaluations will move on to the 4 weeks of Supervised Work Experience. Supervised Work Experience takes place over 4 weeks and consists of a minimum of 100 hours behind the wheel with a certified coach of a sponsoring employer. The Supervised Work Experience segment establishes contact for the graduates with prospective employers. The companies involved in the Supervised Work Experience like the program because only students who pass all the skills and written evaluations are eligible for placement and have proven they are committed to a professional driving career. Note: Supervised Work Experience is provided by the sponsoring transport company with coaches trained by MTI. There is no guarantee that students will qualify for the Supervised Work Experience. There is no charge for the Supervised Work Experience nor is there a refund if the student is unsuccessful.

The course runs Monday to Thursday from 0700 hrs to 1730 hrs in Castlegar so that out of town students have an opportunity to return home for the weekend. One week is spent on night driving which runs from 12:30 to 23:00.
