"Earning Your Wheels" Class 1 Training
This is a 12 week full-time Class 1 training course.
The first 8 weeks include a minimum of:
The final 4 weeks is a Supervised Work Experience component that includes 100 hours behind the wheel with a certified coach. To qualify for the Supervised Work Experience you must achieve an 80% minimum grade on 12 unit evaluations and one final exam, as well as mastery must be achieved on 17 skills evaluations during the first 8 weeks.
This program will provide you with everything you need to start your professional driving career. Subjects covered include:
Training 53' fully loaded trailers and a 100,000 lb loaded tridem tanker;
Night driving;
Rules and regulations governing the industry;
Public relations (how to deal with your customers);
Preparing & daily use of log books;
Transportation of dangerous goods;
Border crossing procedures;
Documentation required on a daily basis;
Proper use and trouble shooting of air brake systems;
Pre-trip, post-trip and en-route inspection;
All the components of a tractor trailer;
Backing/docking maneuvers using 53’, 48’ and 28’ trailers;
Proper shifting techniques;
Driving for fuel economy;
Driving defensively;
Driving in mountains and adverse conditions;
Dealing with dispatch;
Sliding axles and 5th wheels;
Proper chain up techniques;
Coupling/uncoupling procedure;
Trip planning skills;
Driving bobtail;
Electronic engine control’s and trouble shooting;

- 85 hours behind the wheel*/in the yard and
- 70 hours in truck observation time
