1. How long will it take to get my License?
Full-time “Earning your Wheels”:
Class 1 Licence and Earning Your Wheels Training - 8 weeks
Supervised Work Experience (for students that meet the Earning Your Wheels requirements) – 4 weeks
Total for full Earning Your Wheels program – 12 weeks
2. Do I need my air brake endorsement course?
You do not need to complete the Air Brake Course before you write your learner’s license and start your driving instruction.
You will need to complete a certified air brake course and pass a written test through ICBC before you can take your Class 1, 2, or 3 road test. MTI offers air brake courses on a regular basis.
3. What is a PDIC Course?
A Professional Driver Improvement Course is a course we offer to teach defensive driving to truck drivers.
4. What extra costs will I have to pay to receive my License?
These are ICBC fees:
Written tests (air brakes, Class 1 learner’s) $15.00 each
Class 1 road test fee:- $60.00
License renewal fee - $17.00 or $75.00 depending on the date of your regular renewal.
Medical Processing Fee - $28.00
A medical exam may be required, fees will vary, approx. $50.00 to $150.00
5. What kind of vehicle does each class cover?
Class 1 - Any tractor/trailer combination and any other type of vehicle except motorcycles.
Class 2 - Bus, including school bus, or any class 4 or 5 vehicle.
Class 3 - Single unit vehicle with more than two axles, such as dump trucks or large tow trucks.
Class 4 (unrestricted) - Taxi, ambulance, vehicle transporting disabled persons, small bus or school bus that seats a maximum of 25 people, including driver.
Class 4 (restricted) - Taxi, ambulance or vehicle transporting disabled persons.
Class 5 - Any two axle passenger vehicle, motor home, limited speed motorcycles, mopeds or mini-scooters.
Class 6 - Motorcycle.
6. What do I need to study for a Class 1, 2 or 3 learner’s license?
The most current version of a book called “Driving Commercial Vehicles” which is free at any ICBC Driver Service Centre, our office or the ICBC website.
7. When can I start my training course?
Air brakes courses run at the school monthly. Check our Start Dates page for upcoming EYW and Air brakes course dates.

9. What age requirements are there for air brakes, Class 1, 2 and 3?
Air brakes - 16 years old with a valid BC class 5 or out-of-province equivalent driver's license.
Class 1 - 19 years old with a valid BC class 5 or out-of-province equivalent driver’s license.
Class 2 - 19 years old with a valid BC class 5 or out-of-province equivalent driver’s license.
Class 3 - 18 years old with a valid BC class 5 or out-of-province equivalent driver’s license.
10. Is there anything that can stop me from getting a higher class license?
Unpaid fines or too many points on your licence - Call ICBC Drivers Services for further information or check the ICBC website.
11. How do I get a learner’s license?
Pick up a copy of "Driving Commercial Vehicles" at our office or your local ICBC Driver Service Centre (you may have to ask at the counter). Study the chapters which apply to the license you want. You write your learner’s license test at your local ICBC Driver Service Centre. The test is a 35 question multiple choice test. Twenty five questions are on commercial knowledge and ten are on road signs. You must score a minimum of 80% to pass. The test costs $15.00. If you fail you may write it again but not until the next day. Once you pass your written learner’s it is valid for one year. There is additional information on the ICBC website.
12. What gear will I need?
- coveralls
- work gloves
- rain/winter gear
- a spare change of clothes
- light footwear; safety toe boots (steel toed work boots) may be required
